Non-Deadlocking Nightlatch

A non-deadlocking Yale type nightlatch lock is typically fitted to a wooden door. From the outside of the door you would use a Yale type key to open the lock by turning the key to retract the latch on internal Yale type lock body. However, if you are inside the door you can always open this lock using the finger turn mechanism to retract the latch, hence it is not deadlocking and insurance companies would not consider it to be a high security lock.

Deadlocking Nightlatch

A deadlocking Yale type nightlatch lock is also typically fitted to a wooden door. From the outside of the door you would use a Yale type key to open the lock by turning the key to retract the latch on internal Yale type lock body. However, as the name suggests it can also be deadlocked using the key. Some models deadlock by turning the external key ant-clockwise a full turn and removing the key, which then locks the internal finger turn preventing the door from being opened from either side without the key. Other models have an additional keyhole on the internal lock body of the door that can be deadlocked in a similar way, preventing the door from being opened from either side without the key

BS 3621 Deadlocking Nightlatch

A BS 3621 deadlocking nightlatch lock will always be stamped with the British Standard 3621 Kitemark. Since its inception, BS 3621 has always required that a door is secure from both sides, meaning that, once locked; a key is always required to open the door, whether from the inside or the outside.

A BS 3621 Kitemarked Yale type nightlatch lock will have undergone extensive testing to ensure it meets the required standard of security and protection; typically it will have the following characteristics:

  • A 20mm protruding lock bolt (BS 3621-2007) tested to withstand extreme force and attack.
  • Hardened steel roller pins in the lock bolt to protect the lock bolt against cutting attack.
  • Hardened lock cylinder escutcheon to protect the lock against attack by drilling.
  • Steel box frame receiver tested to resist attack.
  • The lock should have anti-pick features to help prevent lock picking.
  • Minimum of 6 pin lock cylinder with hardened cylinder pins to help prevent drilling.

BS 3621 Versions of this lock would have additional features of a higher specification.
